Combat Cage Fight Night

New Entertainment Sport Set to Take Goa By Storm

Goa is introducing India to a new kind of rush, mixing the throb of nightclub entertainment with the nail biting hush of contact sport. Get ready for Combat Cage Fight Night.

Combat Cage Fight Night combines sport and entertainment in an incredible spectacle featuring some of India’s – and Goa’s – most talented athletes performing stunning martial arts feats.

It’s the chance to experience an electric vibe, an ambiance charged with anticipation, and heart-pounding moments before a jaw-clenching finale at a nightclub. With the support of the tourism department, Goa is about to host this new kind of entertainment sport, where sweat and tears are part of the game, where the better man or woman will need to give everything he or she has got to come out tops.

This is Combat Cage Fight, an entertainment sport that makes anything you’ve seen in Goa so far look like child’s play. Scheduled for Sunday, January 18, the Fight Night will take place at Tito’s Courtyard in Baga, where 12 fighters from across the country will go head to head in a six-bout contest that will challenge them physically and mentally as they fight for the top prize.

Combat Cage fighting is a safe, regulated sport involving a combination of a number of martial arts techniques fought inside a metal cage. A variety of traditional combat modes are involved, including boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, Muay Thai, karate, Taekwondo, wrestling, judo and others to overpower the competitor.

Unlike traditional modes where one can to an extent anticipate the type of attack and defence possible based on the underlying structure of the combat mode, this free-style event forces fighters to react instinctively. Even thinking is out of the question! It is fast, intelligent and seemingly, if not actually, dangerous – competitors do not wear any obvious protection and must thwart the other’s attempts to take them down by their own skill.

This is a first-of-its-kind event in India, where the complexity of these technical self-defence skills will merge with the pulsating vibe of a nightclub experience with sensational acts in between bouts. Some of the best DJs will perform at the event, including world renowned Eve Carey, taking the experience to a whole new level.

On Saturday, January 17, Combat Cage Fight will hold the weigh-ins for competitors at Café Mambo in Baga, where visitors will have the chance to get up close and personal with all the competitors and choose who they would like to support the following day. The weigh-ins include all major standard categories, from bantamweight to heavyweight for men and from straw weight to heavyweight for women, although it is not expected that any of the fighters in this Combat Cage Fight Night will fall in the heavyweight categories.

Goa has two competitors in the fray – Nelson Paes from Thivim and Soniya Parab from Chapora. Both have been training vigorously for the past six months to grab the debut Fight Night laurels for Goa. Paes left a life of corporate humdrum behind in Pune to pursue his thirst for sport. Finding his footing in kickboxing in Pune, he has never looked back since, his interest in contact sport continuing to grow as he mastered a variety of techniques.

An alumnus of Monte de Guirim high school, he has already trained in boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling and the basics of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, preparing for fights by learning as much as he can about his opponent to gauge his strengths and weaknesses.

Parab, on the other hand, is a master of boxing, having won her first fight against a male opponent since there were no females in her category. The former student of Guardian Angel High School in Curchorem has already made Goa proud, participating in every National Games since 2004 and being Goa’s only gold medallist at the Guwahati games in 2007. She is also a professional boxer under the Professional Boxing Federation of Russia and has competed against international opponents.

Goa’s Parab will be pitted against Bharati Poswal in the co-main event, while Paes will fight in the main event.

This will be one of India’s leading entertainment sports that also happens to encourage women to take on self-defence skills and showcase their talent to the world.

The first four bouts will have three rounds of three minutes each, while the last two main events will have five rounds of three minutes each. Performances between bouts, in addition to the musical offerings, will include fire dancers and stunning ring girls in the cage, among other artistes.

Combat Cage Fight has ensured that strict security and medical arrangements – including bouncers, paramedics, an on-site doctor and ambulance – are all on hand to maintain order and preparedness in case of any untoward event. Referees will also regulate the bouts according to a pre-decided set of rules.
