ONE BILLION RISING is an event commemorated every year to create awareness regarding the large number of women that are being exposed to domestic and gender related crimes. It is an event being celebrated in the week leading to and following 14 February. This year one billion people in 207 countries rose and danced to demand an end to violence against women and girls.
ONE BILLION RISING FOR JUSTICE is a global call to women survivors of gender violence and their well-wishers, price to gather safely in community to voice their opinions about these crimes and take a stand. It is a call to survivors to break the silence and release their stories – through art, dosage dance, ambulance marches, ritual, song, spoken word, testimonies and whatever way feels right. It is a call to bring on revolutionary justice.
Samarthan, the social initiative of Goa Institute of Management pulled off its’ second successful attempt of One Billion Rising this year. This year they organized an event
“RISE..RELEASE..DANCE.. – Goa Rising” under the global campaign of One Billion Rising. The event was organized on the 16th of February 2014 at the Dona Paula Jetty where close to 50 students participated for the cause. The event commenced with a flash mob during the peak hours of 5 p.m. in the evening, where students grabbed the attention of the crowd with a thrilling dance performance leaving a hint of the theme and cause of the event. After a wonderful performance of close to 5 minutes the students presented a street play for the gathered audience. The play very beautifully showcased gender abuse and injustices that are prevailing towards women these days. It drove the point and indeed touched many hearts and left the crowd applauding and demanding for more. Not only did the students of GIM manage to keep the crowd engaged but also successfully spread an important and crucial message of justice to put an end to violence against women.

This proposed revolution is indeed the need of the hour and these students hope that this small step towards awareness will make a difference among the highly educated population of Goa.
