Facts that we need to know and precautions we can take to prevent the disease. Malaria was endemic in Goa during most of the Portuguese rule. There are records to suggest that malaria in the hinterlands was a serious menace especially in three subdistricts (‘Talukas’) of Sattari, Sanguem and Canacona. However, during eradication phase, malaria incidence was greatly reduced till mid 1980s when only a few cases were reported. A serious epidemic of malaria occurred from 1986-88 in Panaji. At the request of Govt. of Goa, a field unit of National Institute of Malaria Research was established at Panaji on 6th Sept.
